Dog Potty Training - Learn How to Stop Your Dog Making a Mess Inside the House By John C King
The first thing to know in dog potty training is, when your dog makes a mess inside the house it is not a simple case of them not wanting to go outside to do their business. The reason for the mess in the house is usually them being unable to hold on long enough to go outside, or being unable to distinguish where the boundary between inside and outside is.Dogs have a built-in instinct to go away from their den to avoid diseases which can plague them in the wild. That is why going to the bathroom to do their business is the last thing a dog wants to do. It is also the reasons why a dog will hold on to their urine for as long as possible when you are away - to avoid making a mess of the house. Therefore the real issue in dog potty training are a) is the dog able to distinguish between outside and inside the house and, whether it has been trained to tell where his or her home is and b) has the dog being taken outside often enough to relieve itself. To effectively potty train, you have to know which category your dog falls into and the quickest way to solve the problem.Assuming your dog has been partially house broken, the question is then whether the dog is being taken outside often enough. When the weather gets cold or wet some owners will reduce the number of times they take their dog outside. They figured that it is alright for the dog to make a small mess in the house since it is easy enough to clean up.However that single mess can cause problems later on, making dog potty training harder. Firstly dogs do not like going to the bathroom inside to do their potty. This is especially true if they have been trained to go outside. They also feel more comfortable relieving themselves away from the house.Secondly a dog that is allowed to make a small mess inside the house will not learn to go outside for their potty. Dogs do not have a natural ability to distinguish between indoor and outdoor areas.Crate training is a very effective tool to use in dog potty training since it taps into their natural desire to avoid making a mess of the place they sleep. If you are unable to crate train your dog, you can create a routine that allows your dog to go outside at the same time everyday to relieve themselves, and when it does it's business outside give praise. If your dog does make a mess inside the house do not punish them as dogs are incapable of understanding what the punishment is for. You can instead clap your hands loudly or make other forms of sharp noises to startle them. Once you done that, immediately take them outdoors so that they will associate the outdoors with relieving themselves.Dog potty training is teaching a dog where it's home is since dogs have an inbuilt instinct to always go away from their own sleeping area to relieve themselves. You should never allow a dog to make even a small mess in the house as this will not teach them to go outside to relieve themselves.
